Growing up Jehovah Witness, I never celebrated holidays. It was never a big deal because you can not miss something you never experienced.
Working in Industrial Construction for the Union, I traveled a lot for work to complete different projects around the country. One contract took me to Augusta, Ga. When traveling, we usually link up with other Union members, preferably ones that we know but sometimes strangers. For this contract I connected with someone I worked on the Atlanta Airport project with. I did not know her well but she was the first to respond to my post for room and board and she was cool with me bringing my cats.
Everyone has a cat bias lol.
She had 4 dogs and we were worried if they would get along but they did pretty well. Although her dog Zeke, (my dog Bartosz’ father), was curious and walked into my cat Shadow’s carrying case. Shadowman’s nickname was ‘One Punch Man’, he winded his paw back and smacked the crap out of him. From that day forward, Zeke did not like me.lol
I did not think that I would enjoy living with someone but to my surprise, it was one of the best living experiences I’ve had thus far with another person.
Our first, 4th of July together, I told her I never shot fireworks so my roommate decided we would go to South Carolina and buy a bunch of fireworks. Augusta is on the border of S.C. and they sold fireworks that are illegal in Georgia.
We spent about $600 on fireworks. That night our neighbor came over, we set up the grill and they let me set up all the fireworks. We had half an acre in the front yard and across the street was farmland. I ran around sparking the fireworks like a big child running around sparking one at a time, having the time of my life while my roommate looked at me like a proud mama.
Some where around the neighborhood, someone decided to have a show off with us and we beat them by a land slide. We lit up the sky. 🎆🧨
By the end of the night, drunk and out of sparks, our neighbor went and grabbed his guns and we grabbed ours and emptied a couple clips and called it a night.
It was a simple experience for them but for me it made me feel like I was officially a Southerner lol and one of my favorite memories thus far.
