Daily Writing Prompt: What’s the most underrated movie you’ve ever watched?
Recently I responded to a writing prompt asking what was the craziest movie I ever seen. I responded with “Hobo With A ShotGun”, which is a crazy movie.
More recently I watched, “Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round”. I think this takes the place of the craziest movie I have ever seen thus far and also underrated.
I would not say this is a “good” movie. In fact, it was odd and did not answer many questions and the ending left much to be desired. However, I consider it underrated because of the narrative.
“Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round”, is set up like a “Mr. Roger’s” type of kid show. It starts off slow and it had me wondering, “WTF am I watching?”. About 20-30 minutes in is where the show takes a dark turn.
I am a fan of “gore” movies, I love “Hardcore Henry”, The “Terrifier” series and any movies along those lines. Those are my movies where the storyline doesn’t matter, its just an action, horror gore fest with no lessons to learn.lol But this movie took the cake. There were moments in the film where I had to look away which never happens….
The premise of the movie was ‘inner child wounds’ and how that manifest in our psyche as we get older. Some childhood wounds we bury in the depths of our subconscious mind but they also manifest in ways that can be twisted and disturbing if we never work through it. Also, how working through these wounds is not a fun experience.
Talk about shadow work on 1000%.
This made me think of my WebComic, “The Adventures of Dream”. When I first started writing book one, I wanted to do the backstory before I jumped into the Cosmic Adventure’s and it ended up being another deep dive into shadow work. As I was writing it, some memories came up that I forgot about and had to work through in real time. “Chapter 5: Stay Asleep: Close Encounters“, (👈🏽can read for free) was one of those chapters where I relived some childhood trauma that initially, I never thought had an impact on me. However, as I wrote about it, I realized I subconsciously internalized those events, especially because it was something I never spoke about out loud until now.
All this to say, “Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round”, is not the greatest movie, but definitely something I suggest watching at least once, if you have the stomach for gore and don’t mind watching someone live out their trauma because it makes you question, What childhood trauma have I left unresolved and how is that effecting my life now?
