The Art of Doing Nothing

Silence the mind

“In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.” Deepak Chopra

Every day that I wake I am reminded of my need to stay focused on my well-being. As a human in present-day culture, the need to “do more” is repeatedly implanted in our brains. The act of being still proves to be a difficult task to achieve. In a time where attention spans move rapidly in this “out of sight, out of mind” culture, we are programmed to stay relevant by over-extending ourselves to the point of exhaustion.

To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.” Lao Tzu

Burnout is real. Emotional exhaustion is harder to recover from than physical in my experience. All of my life I have been a “doer”. I had to learn to release and let go, but this is not a single act. The art of releasing is constant. Being aware of my environment at all times is a must. Many times I have been overdo.e with emotions and only when I sat still could I come to an awareness of what was my emotions and what was being projected on to me from my environment. Have you ever felt unexplained emotions? Check your environment, these emotions may not be yours to bear.

It is said that our environment is a reflection of self. In chaotic times I find myself questioning, “What can I do? What am I not seeing?” The answer is always simple, it is not what you can do, but how you should be. Reflect on self and the answers will set you free.

“Wisdom comes with the ability to be still. Just look and just listen. No more is needed. Being still, looking, and listening activates the non-conceptual intelligence within you. Let stillness direct your words and actions.” Eckhart Tolle
